Portage County Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy Having trained martial arts since he was 6 years old (1985), Bill Jones has been exposed to virtually every style available. In addition to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, he has trained in Tae Kwon do, Boxing, Kung Fu, Aiki Ju Jitsu, and Karate, earning black belt rankings in the last three respectively. He is well versed in weapons use and has worked with practitioners of silat, kali, hapkido, and aikido.  In all his experience, he has never found another art that is as intuitive and effective as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Bill’s real passion is in teaching. Since 1999, Bill has been instructing martial arts. He began by assisting his Kung Fu instructor, Dale McGinnis. After earning a black belt in Shotokan Karate, he started teaching both kids and adult classes at Mahoning Valley Martial Arts under Bob Magnusun.  While deployed in Iraq Bill, a Staff Sergeant, was called upon to teach a hand to hand combat class while serving as the training NCO. After returning home in 2004 and graduating from Youngstown State University with a degree in Exercise Science, Bill began teaching the university’s accredited Self Defense program. In addition, he began assisting with instruction in BJJ at The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Self Defense Academy under Tony Rinaldi and Brian Mlinarsik. Eventually he earned the prestige of teaching his own classes at the academy. He has traveled and taught seminars at The Sheffield Village Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy and Power’s Martial Arts Academy. After earning a job at Robinson Memorial Hospital, Bill was forced to quit teaching due to work hours and driving distance. However, the passion still remained. It’s said that “where there’s a will, there’s a way.” Bill is no exception to the rule and decided to begin running his own school. So, in May of 2010, the Portage County Jiu-Jitsu Academy was born. Bill’s personal goal is to become the foremost expert on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the portage county area. His goal for the Portage County Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy is to become the most respected martial arts training hub in the area.
